Winter Storm Watching

Wave crash on offshore rocks

Photo © F.L. Hiser Jr.

A drive along Pebble Beach Drive, with its numerous viewpoints, is one of the best areas for watching winter storms. Powerful storms pound the wild redwood coast during the winter months. South west winds known as "southerlies" can reach 50-60mph, driving ocean swells to crash as huge waves on the shore and on offshore rocks.

Bundle up with weather proof gear and warm clothing; waterproof boots, hats, and gloves will provide added protection. Stay far enough back from the shore and the ocean's edge during storm events; large "sneaker waves" break and sweep away those who are unprepared. Never turn your back on the ocean.
