Ma-le'l Dunes consists of 444 acres and is managed cooperatively by the BLM and the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The area is located on the Samoa Peninsula, just north of Manila.

The diversity in landforms supports a unique combination of coastal dune, wetland, and estuarine ecosystems. This diversity provides a haven for a rich variety of plants and animals.

Eleven different plant habitats are found within this relatively small area. Two federally listed endangered plants make their home in Ma-le'l's dune mat habitat, the Humboldt Bay wallflower and beach layia. The area's diverse dune habitats are also home to a variety of birds, small mammals, insects, reptiles, and amphibians

Recreational Opportunities

Hiking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and nature study are allowed on designated trails and in open sandy areas. The parking area contains a restroom and picnic tables.

Seasons Accessible

The southern portion of Ma-le'l Dunes, managed by BLM, is open year round for day use activities. The northern portion of the area, managed by the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, is currently closed to public use pending completion of a cooperative management plan.
