The Lighthouse Tour of Northern California identifies the twelve lighthouses from the Oregon border to the Golden Gate and the nine lights inside San Francisco Bay. This Tour provides a brief history of each one and provides contact information to learn details. The Tour identifies lighthouse where you may lodge, those you can view, and those you can visit. You can join the Tour at any point.

Length of Byway or Route: Follow Coast Hwy 1from the Oregon Border to the Golden Gate.

Highlights and Key Points Along the Route

The Tour features Battery Point (1856), a quaint lighthouse accessible only at low tide in which the light tower is in the center of the keeper's quarters. Also, Point Arena Lighthouse (1870 and 1908), located less than four miles from the San Andreas Fault the 1870 lighthouse and keeper's quarters were destroyed in the 1906 Great Quake. The 1908 lighthouse is the first reinforced concrete lighthouse. The historic first order Fresnel lens is preserved in the onsite museum. Visitors have total access to the 115 foot, tallest on the west coast 1908 lighthouse tower. The Alcatraz Island light (1854) was the first lighthouse on the Pacific Coast. Lodging is available at Point Arena, Point Cabrillo and East Brother lighthouses.
