The monument islets at Mendocino Headlands State Park are very close, providing for excellent observation of roosting and nesting seabirds. Between mid-April and late August, nesting Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants can easily be viewed, while Common Murres nest on the outer ends of the northwest islets. Black Oystercatchers also nest in the area.

The pull-outs along the park's headlands loop accommodate cozy viewing of winter storm surf breaking over the islets.

The Mendocino Headlands mile-long loop is located on the west side of the town of Mendocino off Heeser Drive along the western edge of Mendocino Headlands State Park.

Recreational Opportunities

A foot trail winds around the outer edge of the 70’ high flat-topped coastal terrace that makes up the headlands.

On the south side of the headlands, near the west end of Main Street, a blow-hole can be viewed.

North of Mendocino Headlands to Fort Bragg are Point Cabrillo Light Station and State Reserve, Casper Headlands State Beach and Reserve, and Jug Handle State Reserve. Numerous California Coastal National Monument rocks are seen from the hiking trails on these state parks.
