California Coastal National Monument ~ Viewpoint ~ Bruhel Point Bluff Rocks

Bruhel Point Rocks, one of the more recognizable features of the national monument, can be viewed from the CalTrans’ Mendocino Coastal Trails Vista Point. From the parking area one sees the seastacks and exposed reefs at a distance, or hike a half mile to the coastline for a closer look at the animals who make the monument their home.
The CalTrans parking area has interpretive panels. The hardened trail leads a ½ mile to the coastline where one can see an exceptional example of an exposed reef, a feature of the moument.
The exposed reef provides the habitat for a large colony of Harbor Seals that are very visible from the trail. Black Oystercatchers, a very vocal shorebird, may be seen and heard moving around the reef. Gulls and cormorants are usually present, as well.
The CalTrans’ Mendocino Coastal Trails Vista Point is located on the west side of Highway 1 at Mendocino County mile marker 74.09 about 4½ miles north of the mouth of the Ten Mile River and 11 miles north of MacKerricher State Park.
This 145-acre scenic area was acquired by the State of California for preservation purposes and stretches along the coastline for approximately 1.8 miles. Depending on the time of year, a variety of butterflies (e.g., Edith’s Checker Spots) and song birds (e.g., gold finch) can been seen along the trail.
