Adler Fels Winery Tasting Room

Adler Fels Winery was founded in Sonoma Valley in 1979 by David and Ayn Coleman. The winery soon established itself as a producer of award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay from Sonoma County, especially Russian River Valley. Adler Fels later expanded our sourcing to include ultra-premium wine varietals from Napa Valley and other premier appellations throughout California.

David Coleman was a true wine industry pioneer, developing innovations in production that would later become industry standards. David created the first gold foil label to be used on California wine bottles. He is also credited with inventing the adjustable top fermentation tank. In addition, David established the winery’s unique program of custom winemaking so our clients could contract bottle their own proprietary wine blends and brands.

Adler Fels is now owned by the Adams Wine Group, a collection of premium wineries and wine-related businesses. The new leadership team is ensuring that the innovative and entrepreneurial tradition first established in 1979 continues at Adler Fels today.

David and Ayn Coleman designed and built the original Adler Fels winery and guest house, which are nestled 1,500 feet above Sonoma Valley in the picturesque Mayacamas Mountains in Northern California. The mountaintop location commands a panoramic view of the Valley of the Moon and beyond to California’s dramatic coastline. The buildings celebrate the founders’ passion for grand architecture, including the historically-inspired turrets, towers and Tudor-style flourishes. The winery features state-of-the-art fermentation tanks and storage for 700 wine barrels. Adler Fels also operates a modern wine production and bottling facility in Santa Rosa, California. Unfortunately, our winery facilities are not open to the public. Trade and press visits may be made by appointment.

From the beginning, Adler Fels always believed in great vineyards – but just not in owning them. We recognized that our real talent was in winemaking, and growing and farming grapes was best left to the pros (viticulture is a very specialized field). Instead, we focused on winemaking, developing long-term partnerships with growers who shared our commitment to quality and vision of making world-class wine. We're very proud of the fact that several of our growers from the Russian River Valley have been supplying grapes to Adler Fels since the winery’s founding in 1979.

As the winery expanded production to include other appellations throughout California, Adler Fels came to embrace the negociant method of winemaking. Negociant is a French term referring to the wine merchants of Bordeaux who buy bulk wine from various chateaus, then blend and bottle the finished wines under their own labels. By establishing a strong network of vintners throughout California’s premier wine regions, Adler Fels is able to craft a wide array of quality wines from a wide range of quality grape sources. We believe this versatility results in more interesting, complex wines by allowing us to select and blend lots from multiple vineyards instead of just a few.

For both our estate and negociant brands, our core philosophy remains the same: to produce well-balanced, elegant wines with intense varietal character and deliver great values to our trade customers and consumers.
